Rt. Rev. Charles J.S. Kasonde, Bishop of Solwezi Diocese
Rt. Rev. Bishop Charles Joseph Sampa Kasonde was born on 14th December 1968, in Kalulushi, Copperbelt Province. He did his secondary education at St. Francis Secondary School, Malole, in Kasama, Northern Province. He later did a year of spirituality studies at Emmaus Spirituality Centre in Lusaka before proceeding to Mpima’s St Augustine Seminary in Kabwe where he got a diploma in Philosophy and Religious Studies, and St. Dominic’s Major Seminary in Lusaka where he was awarded a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology (BD) respectively. He finished his seminary studies in June 1998. Bishop Kasonde also holds a Licentiate (Masters) in Systematic Theology (Dogmatic Theology) from St. Mary’s Seminary and University Baltimore, USA, and a Diploma in Industrial Arts and Metal Work Technology from TVT College in Luanshya.
Bishop Kasonde was ordained priest on 4th August, 2001 for the Diocese of Ndola. In the Diocese of Ndola, he worked as the Diocesan Pastoral Coordinator (2001-2004), Parish Priest at St. Kizito, Lubuto in Ndola (2001-2004) and Vicar at the Sacred Heart Parish in Luanshya from 1998 to 2000. Until his appointment as Bishop of Solwezi, Bishop National Pastoral Coordinator from 2004 and a visiting lecturer at St. Dominic’s Major Seminary.
The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI on the 23rd of March, 2010, appointed Rev. Fr. Charles Sampa Kasonde as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Solwezi. Bishop Kasonde takes over from Bishop Alick Banda who moved to Ndola Diocese. He was consecrated bishop on 29th May 2010.
